Building on last years success, Boise Code Camp will again be adding a youth track to its traditional selection of community driven technical content. The youth track is a full day of sessions dedicated to the experienced and novice programmer between the ages of 6 and 16.
Why a youth track?
In past years Boise Code Camp has had a single session presented for kids by kids as young as 6 years old. These sessions were so well received and attended that we were encouraged to expand beyond just a single session. In the last year, millions of kids, many of them in our own community, have learned to code with the Hour of Code and tools like Scratch and Raspberry Pi. Boise Code Camp is representative of our community and the kids in our community are starting to code.
Who is the youth track for?
The youth track is for the novice or experienced kid coder. In our Scratch sessions, new coders will find a very approachable platform and participants in the Hour of Code will find a very familiar interface style. Experienced coders will find challenging material for building a web site or can even sneak into an adult focused javscript or robotics session and learn what it's like to be a professional programmer. And, of course, what kid doesn't want to learn how to hack on Minecraft and hang out with other kids who are also interested in technology?
When is the youth track?
Come for the whole day or just drop in for a session or two.
What does it cost?
Like all code camp events, the youth track is FREE but we do ask that you register on the Boise Code Camp web site so we can have an idea of how many attendees to expect.
- How long are Boise Code Camp sessions?
Each session is 1 hour and 15 minutes with a 10 minute break between sessions.
- Who is presenting?
In the spirit of Code Camp, all sessions are presented by your community. Kid coders as young as 6 years old and up through high school will be showing off their skills along with professional programmers presenting sessions focused on the young coder.
- Can parents attend the kid sessions too?
Yes! You don't want your kids to be smarter than you do you? Seriously though, parents are encouraged to attend the sessions along with their kids and to help them take the fun of coding home. There will also be content geared to help parents of kid coders cope with their new found super powers.
Boise Code Camp isn't a drop off program or day care. The event takes place on an open campus so it is important that all children are appropriately supervised.
